Case 019  reporting  /  found in an address bar

Two characters a paid developer had already missed

A reporting integration would not connect, so the sales team had gone months without automated numbers. A paid developer had already looked at it and moved on. The problem stayed filed under complicated, which is the safest place a problem can live.

The identifier sitting in the address bar carries a two character prefix that is not part of the identifier itself. That was it. That was the entire thing. Remove two characters and months of dark reporting turn back on. The fix took twenty minutes, and most of that was confirming it.

None of it required being smart. It required being willing to look at the boring part.

Every stack has a boring part nobody wants to read closely. That is usually where the money went.

The full write-up

Leave your email and I will send you this finding in full: how it hid, what it cost, and how long it had been running.

Then one finding like it most weeks. Written by me. Leave any time.

Appointments down and nobody can say why? That is the thing I do.
